I don't know when the next generation of DVDs is due, and whether BluRay or SuperDVD wins out is not my concern. I do hope however that they use all the space for better quality movies rather than just more movie (or extra features). By better quality I mean less darn compression!! I just sat through "Hot Shots" on DVD and although the movie itself was enjoyable, the inter-frame compression was causing extreme lagging of some parts of the image. Throughout the film the characters faces stayed put on the screen while the rest of their head moved about. Freaky. Reminded me of hte Mr Potato head images on the early video phone demonstrations.
BTW (and that's an initialism not an acronym) whatever became of the DVD-audio vs SA-CD battle?

Is it not HD-DVD? Might the quality of the video on your DVD have something to do with your player or had they squeezed the compression right up to get all those fine extras about, "The funny time somebody could not remember thier lines" or "How we made the plane go Whoooosh"? I think that they will still be using MPEG-2 on the new formats but I assume they will be able to use a better bit rate.
Still these new formats will be along real soon and then we will have the advantage of not being able to play them on anything that the movie companies don't want us to.

The SA-CD and DVD-Audio battle rages on but as most people are now concentrating on how much of the sound quality they can rip out before you can hear the diffirence on you tinny ipod headphones, then they are not that likely to pay the extra for a better quality orignal.
That was basically my worry - that they are trying to squeeze way too many unnecessary extras onto the disc and leaving little room for the movie itself, hence the stoopid compression.
You're probably right about the HD-DVD aspect. If they continue to put all those extras on the disc (this time in HD). Will we end up once again with high compression which nullifies the enhanced definition? I'd rather have a larger capacity DVD playing normal definition at little or lossless compression.
It's that old gripe about "digital is better". It's better only when they allow it to be.
On the flip side, yep, I couldn't give a rat's arse about SA-CD. All my CDs are now compressed to 96kbps AAC which is good enough for me & my 'pod.
A couple of years ago Sony released high bit rate DVDs known as superbit, I don't think Hot Shots was one of them.
